Which bean-to-cup should you buy?

Search for “best bean-to-cup” and you get lists that contradict each other, usually because each has a different buyer in mind without saying so. This piece says so: which machine is good depends on how much milk you drink, how much you drink, and how long you want to keep it.

The milk system matters more than the brand

With bean-to-cups the real difference is not the brew group but what happens to milk. Machines from the same maker often share internals across three price brackets; what you are buying on top is the milk system, the screen and the number of recipes.

If you drink your coffee black you can skip the milk system and keep the money. If you drink cappuccino daily it is the part that decides whether you still like the machine in three years.

  • Systems without tubes unclip and go in the dishwasher.
  • Systems with a hose into a carafe often froth better and demand discipline.
  • No milk system at all is a valid choice, not a shortcoming.

What you are and are not paying for

Above roughly seven hundred euros you are paying for grinding and build quality, not for more features. That difference is real, but it is the kind you notice at six cups a day and not at two.

Below it you are paying for the menu. A range with five, twelve and twenty drinks usually shares one brew group, and the cup is the same. So look first at what you actually make, and only then at what the menu lists.

Reliability is dull and counts most

The machines that keep running for years are rarely the newest. A design that has been around a decade has parts everywhere, every repairer knows it, and the teething problems were solved ten years ago.

That is why an older Magnifica is still a good buy, and why a newly introduced model with a long feature list is not automatically better.

When a portafilter machine is the better answer

If you enjoy the process you will get more out of a five-hundred-euro portafilter machine than out of a thousand-euro bean-to-cup. You set the grind, the dose and the time yourself, and that is where the taste comes from.

If those motions feel like chores, that same machine becomes an expensive box you do not use. This is the one question you have to answer honestly.
