Limescale is what most machines die of, and vinegar attacks the seals. A liquid descaler declared suitable for espresso machines does the same job as the maker’s own branded fluid, usually for less.

Nivona
A German bean-to-cup that spends its money on engineering, not ads
€949.00
Too few measurements yetWe have only recently started tracking this price. Once we have measured enough days, this will say whether now is a good moment.
Nivona is far less known in the Netherlands than Jura or Philips, and has been a fixture in Germany for twenty years. The difference is mostly marketing: the 799 has a hardened steel conical burr and a removable brew group, which at this price ought to be the rule rather than the exception.
Next to a [Jura E8](machine:jura-e8) the 799 is plain. No aluminium, no show display — a TFT screen, an app over Bluetooth, and a machine you take apart yourself to clean. At 24 centimetres wide it also fits between cabinets where a broad bean-to-cup will not.
Who for: Anyone who puts engineering over badge and will do their own upkeep.

RecommendedFor flushing the brew group. Coffee oils settle where you cannot reach, and a bean-to-cup with a cleaning programme expects a tablet to go with it.

Go to bolEvery bean fits every machine. What differs is the order: on a bean-to-cup the 100% arabica beans come first, because dark-roasted blends carrying robusta give off more oil and that clogs a built-in grinder sooner.

Single origin and roasted lighter than the Italian blends. Lighter-roasted beans are harder and want a finer grind — see the article on beans.

All arabica as well, but roasted darker than the Oro. The middle path between the soft arabica blends and the firm bar blends.

All arabica, and so softer and more acidic than the blends carrying robusta. Anyone who finds espresso too harsh often starts here.

A blend of nine arabicas, and by a wide margin the most expensive kilo here — the 250 g bag looks cheap and per kilo is nothing of the sort.
